Amidst the vibrant tapestry of Tokyo, nestled in the Musashino area, lies Higashi Elementary School. A school not just of bricks and mortar, but one woven with threads of dedication and a unique approach to education. Higashi Elementary School’s story begins not within its walls, but in a kindergarten established in 1964 by Dr. Kiyo Kitahara. Her revolutionary Daily Life Therapy®, designed for children with autism, blossomed from her experience with an autistic child in her regular kindergarten class. Word of her remarkable achievements spread like wildfire. In 1973, the Japanese Ministry of Education recognized the Musashino Higashi School as a research center for autism. This was a significant milestone for Dr. Kitahara and her burgeoning method. Higashi Elementary School itself came into being in 1977, a testament to Dr. Kitahara’s growing influence and the demand for her innovative approach. This wasn’t just another elementary school. It was a place where children with autism could learn and grow, guided by the principles of Daily Life Therapy®. This therapy wove together the routines of daily life into a learning experience. It emphasized self-reliance, social interaction, and the development of practical skills. By 1983, the Musashino Higashi School had expanded to include a junior high school. In 1984, an International Division opened. This welcomed students from all corners of the world, drawn by Dr. Kitahara’s reputation. Higashi Elementary School became a beacon of hope for families seeking specialized education for their children. The school’s reach extended beyond Japan. Dr. Kitahara even brought her method to the United States. The Boston Higashi School opened in 1987, continuing her legacy across the ocean. Dr. Kitahara’s work earned her the Avon Award as Woman of the Year in 1988, a recognition of her profound impact on the lives of countless children. Though Dr. Kitahara passed away in 1989, Higashi Elementary School stands as a living tribute to her vision. Her Daily Life Therapy® continues to shape the lives of students. It offers a unique and effective approach to education, nurturing independence and fostering a sense of community within the heart of Tokyo.
