Solsångaren Statue

Gazing up at the Solsångaren, did you notice something peculiar? This isn’t just any statue. It’s a torso, deliberately missing its head and arms. The Solsångaren, Swedish for “The Sun Singer,” stands proudly in Strömparterren Park, overlooking the Norrström River. It was created by the renowned Swedish sculptor Carl Milles and unveiled on October 21, 1926. This bronze figure, with its verdant green patina, is more than just a captivating artwork. It’s a monument to the celebrated Swedish poet, Esaias Tegnér. The Swedish Academy of Letters commissioned Milles for the work in 1918, initially envisioning just a bust. But Milles had grander plans. He drew inspiration from Tegnér’s poem “Song to the Sun,” specifically the lines, “To you I sing a song, to you, oh radiant sun.” This explains why the statue represents Apollo, the Greek god of the sun, poetry, and music. The missing head and arms aren’t a mistake. Milles intentionally designed the statue this way. By reducing the figure to a torso, he emphasized its dynamic contrapposto stance, where the body’s weight rests on one leg while the other is extended forward. This amplifies the sense of movement and highlights the form’s elegance. Interestingly, this specific Solsångaren is a larger version of a smaller model. There are several other versions, including a colossal one also found in Stockholm’s Millesgården and others in the United States. The circular base beneath the Solsångaren features a decorative frieze. Upon closer inspection, you’ll notice small running figures in relief. These represent the Muses, goddesses of inspiration in the arts and sciences. The statue is often mistaken as just a generic sun god, but it carries a deeper meaning. It’s a tribute to Tegnér’s poetic genius. The Solsångaren’s gleaming bronze form catches the sunlight. It stands as a powerful symbol of artistic inspiration and a lasting testament to both Tegnér and Milles’ creative legacies.
