Founded in 1907 the Nippon Dental University’s birthplace stands before us. This isn’t just a building. It’s the cradle of Japanese dentistry. Imagine the bustling streets of Tokyo in 1907. This area was then part of Kanda District. It was a time of significant change. The Meiji Restoration had modernized Japan. Western medicine including dentistry was gaining traction.

Yet dental education lagged. Qualified dentists were scarce. Dr. Gokichi Nakahara a visionary saw the need. He dedicated himself to establishing a proper dental school. His ambition was immense. He wanted to train highly skilled dentists. He wanted to improve the health of the nation.

Dr Nakahara’s persistence paid off. His private initiative brought about a monumental shift. The Nippon Dental University was founded in 1907. It was Japan’s very first private dental school. It was also the country’s first dental school to be designated under the Dentists Act.

Initially the school was located in Kanda District. It struggled financially. The Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923 caused further hardship. Despite the challenges Dr. Nakahara remained resolute. He secured a new location in Chiyoda Ward. The school moved to its current location in 1909. It continued to thrive despite the obstacles.

This location became a hub for dental innovation. It trained generations of dentists. These dentists became leaders in their field. They shaped the practice of dentistry in Japan. The university’s growth continued. It expanded its facilities and programs. It established a dental technology school and eventually expanded to a second campus in Niigata prefecture.

Today the Nippon Dental University is a world-renowned institution. It stands as a testament to Dr Nakahara’s vision and commitment. This site which we stand before. This is more than just a university. This is a living legacy. It stands as a symbol of progress and dedication to oral health in Japan.
