The story begins with Luigi Francescon. He was an Italian-American missionary. He first came to Brazil in 1910. His arrival marked the beginning of a significant religious movement. He journeyed from Chicago Illinois to São Paulo. Then he went to Santo Antonio da Plantina in Paraná.
Francescon’s missionary trips proved successful. He found followers among Italian immigrants and Brazilian nationals. The Christian Congregation in Brazil grew dynamically. By 2016 the church boasted around 2.8 million members. In 2021 there were 24272 temples. The church’s presence extends beyond Brazil with over 50000 temples worldwide.
In the metro area of São Paulo the church is particularly strong. It has 500000 followers distributed across 2000 churches. The mother-church in the Brás district houses a 9800-member congregation.
Francescon’s journey to founding the Christian Congregation is interesting. He was an early founder of the Italian-American Pentecostal church in Chicago. His beliefs led him to leave the First Italian Presbyterian Church of Chicago. He embraced water baptism by immersion. Later he accepted doctrines such as anointing with oil miracles and Holy Spirit baptism. This occurred at the North Avenue Full Gospel Mission led by William Howard Durham.
Evangelists from Chicago spread the word. They went to Italian colonies in the United States. They established churches primarily in the Northeast. Many of these churches joined the Christian Church of North America. A few affiliated with the Christian Congregation in the United States.
