How about a story of resilience? It unfolds right here before the Monument to the Heroes of Warsaw. This monument also is known as the Warszawska Nike. It stands as a powerful tribute to all who perished in Warsaw from 1939 to 1945. This includes those who defended Warsaw in September 1939. It also includes the brave souls of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising and the Warsaw Uprising. Let’s not forget the countless victims of German terror during the occupation.

The decision to create the Monument to the Heroes of Warsaw came on July 30, 1956. The Metropolitan National Council of Warsaw made this important decision. The first competition in February 1957 drew 196 entries. These entries came from Poland and abroad. The competition was inconclusive. A second contest in January 1959 included the laureates from the first. Of 106 entries, Marian Konieczny won. He was a sculptor. Architects Zagremma and Adam Konieczny also contributed.

The statue depicts a woman rising. She holds a sword high in her right hand. Her left hand is also raised. The ten-ton sculpture stands seven meters tall and six meters long. The granite pedestal bears an inscription. It reads: “To the heroes of Warsaw from 1939 to 1945”. This is “Bohaterom Warszawy 1939–1945” in Polish.

Casting the sword was quite a challenge. It weighed about 1000 kg. The design used special steel bars inside. This made the sword very strong. It could deviate up to 15 cm in the wind. The monument was transported in two parts. It came from Silesia to Warszawa Gdańska station. This station is north of the site.

The Monument to the Heroes of Warsaw was unveiled on July 20, 1964. It stood in Theatre Square. This was in front of the Grand Theatre. The construction was funded by social contributions. The Social Capital Reconstruction Fund also contributed.

In the early 1990s, things changed for the Monument to the Heroes of Warsaw. Restoration required its relocation. On November 14, 1995, it was taken down. It was temporarily placed behind the Jabłonowski Palace reconstruction. Marian Konieczny adapted the monument for its new location.

A disagreement arose. It was about the plinth’s height. Konieczny envisioned Nike soaring. He wanted a 20-meter pedestal. Authorities proposed 6.5 meters. They compromised on 14 meters. Marta Pinkiewicz-Woźniakowska designed the new base. It needed a deep foundation. This was because the monument was on a rubble embankment. The base is made of reinforced concrete. It imitates natural stone.

On December 15, 1997, the Monument to the Heroes of Warsaw found its new home. It was placed on the new pedestal at its current location. The statue now stands at the intersection of Nowy Przejazd and Aleja Solidarności. The Monument to the Heroes of Warsaw, the Warszawska Nike, continues to inspire. It stands as a lasting symbol of courage and resilience. It honors those who fought and died for Warsaw.
