“Manmanlai” or “take it slow” echoes in my mind as we approach Central Bay Square. This concept underpins the masterplan, inviting us to savor the moment. Central Bay Square is more than just a location. It is a vibrant public realm in Shenzhen.

Central Bay Square is nestled in the Houhai district of Nanshan. This area is known for its high-tech industries and talented professionals. Yet, Nanshan also boasts picturesque urban landscapes. Central Bay Square is a key part of this beauty.

The square is part of the Shenzhen Bay Cultural Plaza project. The Oval Partnership designed this project. Their goal was to reconnect fragmented land parcels. They aimed to bridge the city with the bay. They also wanted to connect transit, culture, landmarks, open spaces, people and places.

Digital placemaking played a vital role. It helped optimize pedestrian flow. It also enhanced the project’s value through point-of-interest clustering analysis.

Central to Central Bay Square’s success is its cultural positioning. The designers collaborated with Philip Dodd, a cultural entrepreneur. Together, they surveyed Shenzhen’s cultural landscape. This led to a strategy of mixed primary uses. These uses are woven along a public realm. This forms “Villages” with diverse characters. These “Villages” include Field, Terrace, Townhall, Lighthouse and the Bay.

An elevated Mainstreet connects these Villages. It branches out to connect with neighboring sites. This forms a system of Treewalks. Below, a Green Valley connects stations with the project. It also links to surrounding amenities. Streets, squares, terraces and alleys thread through the Villages. They support an ecosystem of points of interest.

The architecture at Central Bay Square makes way for landscaping. This landscaping creates a verdant realm between structures. Productive landscapes and botanical gardens offer climatic control. Cultural forests add horticultural experiences. These elements create a background of serendipity.

Central Bay Square is one of the first projects to use Digital Placemaking methods. This toolkit allows designers to integrate place and people data analytics. The team can test design iterations in real-time. They can also generate comparative analyses of connectivity. This helps them create the optimal masterplan.

Sada Lam, the Project Director, said their architectural expression is “absent”. The architecture forms a framework. This framework empowers stakeholders to co-create Shenzhen’s next hub. A hub that its people are proud of.

As you explore Central Bay Square, notice how it blends culture, commerce and nature. The nearby MixC Shenzhen Bay offers shopping and dining. Talent Park provides green space. Together, they create an integrated ecosphere.

Central Bay Square is an integral part of the Shenzhen Bay Super Headquarters Base. This base is accelerating the city’s future. The square’s design considers waterfront engagement and integrated circulation networks.

Look around at the towers defining the edges of the square. They frame an urban plaza inspired by New York’s Rockefeller Center. A signature headquarters tower serves as the plaza’s focal point. Its fluid shape engages the public realm. The integrated landscaping augments Shenzhen’s lush environment.

Take a moment to appreciate the balance here. Central Bay Square is a testament to thoughtful urban planning. It is a place where people can connect. It is where culture thrives, and where the city embraces its future.
