Feel the gentle sway beneath your feet. You are standing on the Sebastian Kneipp Denkmal. This isn’t just any bridge. It’s the Sebastian Kneipp Steg. This footbridge connects the Sanderau and Steinbachtal districts. It replaced a ferry. That ferry struggled to handle the crowds. Up to 3000 people crossed daily. The people demanded a better solution. They wanted a bridge.
The Sebastian Kneipp Steg finally opened on July 22 1978. The Noell Stahl- und Maschinenbau GmbH built it. It’s 180 meters long. At its highest point it is about 10 meters above the Main River. Notice how narrow it is only 3 meters wide. Just enough for pedestrians and cyclists.
But this wasn’t always safe. The initial railing was only 1.10 meters high. Too low. A wire mesh fence was added. But children still squeezed through. Finally in 2015 a new railing was installed. It is a safer 1.30 meters high. The bridge even has shock absorbers. This reduces the swaying when many people cross.
Why Sebastian Kneipp you ask? This bridge honors the naturopath. His bust stands at the bridge’s entrance. He is commemorated here for his contributions. He’s an important part of Würzburg’s history.
