Imagine stepping into a world of vibrant faith and unwavering devotion. This is the St. John’s Pentecostal Church, an emblem of spiritual strength in the heart of St. John’s, Antigua. The church stands tall, a testament to the enduring legacy of Pentecostalism in Antigua. It’s more than just a place of worship; it’s a cultural landmark, a beacon of hope.

The story of St. John’s Pentecostal Church is one of resilience, growth, and unwavering faith. In 1943, a small group of Pentecostal immigrants from Montserrat found themselves yearning for a space to worship God. They met under a coconut palm tree, a humble starting point for a journey of spiritual transformation.

These pioneers, Brother James Rodney, Sisters Mary Brades and Alley Browne, laid the foundation for a thriving church. The congregation grew rapidly, fueled by the passion for God and the desire to spread the Pentecostal message. The church moved from a small shed to Mannix Hall, then to a wooden building on Bishopgate Street.

A pivotal moment arrived in 1951 when, with the support of the Pentecostal Assemblies of Canada, the church acquired land to build its first permanent edifice. It was a testament to the growing influence of the church and the dedication of its members.

Many local missionaries played a significant role in deepening the church’s roots and extending its outreach. Reverend and Mrs. Jack Piper were instrumental in establishing ministries across Antigua. This expansion further cemented the church’s position as a vital force in the community.

In 1991, Pastor Raymond Prosper, Brother Hollis Henry, and Brother Everette Jonas took the reins, guiding the church through a period of transition. A new sanctuary was built on Lauchland Benjamin Drive in Woods Estate in 2011, a testament to the church’s continued growth and its dedication to serving the community.

Standing here today, you feel the pulse of a community united by faith. St. John’s Pentecostal Church continues to be a source of spiritual nourishment, a beacon of hope, and a symbol of the enduring power of faith.
