Hidden in plain sight, between Via Carlo Alberto and Via Cavour, sits the Chiesa della Madonna degli Angeli. This isn’t just another church in bustling Torino. It’s a time capsule, a silent witness to centuries of history. The Chiesa della Madonna degli Angeli first opened its doors in 1654. It began as a humble convent for the Reformed Franciscan Friars. Imagine those early days, the quiet murmur of prayers echoing within its walls. The church became a parish in 1834, a spiritual anchor for the community. Then, between 1908 and 1911, architect Carlo Ceppi stepped onto the scene. He reimagined the Chiesa della Madonna degli Angeli, giving it the grand façade, the towering dome, and the elegant bell tower we see today. Ceppi’s dome, a marvel of engineering, was one of the first reinforced concrete structures in Turin. Inside, the single nave stretches out, flanked by interconnected side chapels. Two baroque altars grace the simulated transept, their ornate details a testament to the artistry of the era. The original wooden choir and marble high altar still reside in the semicircular apse. Look closely at the façade. Large marble slabs adorn its surface. The entrance, framed by a large arch supported by four columns, is intricately decorated with angel heads, a motif repeated around the entire perimeter. This church has also known darker days. During a bombing raid on August 8, 1943, the Chiesa della Madonna degli Angeli suffered damage. Part of the roof was torn away, and the vault sustained minor injuries. Thankfully, repairs were swiftly undertaken. But the scars remain, a reminder of the resilience of this sacred space. A particularly poignant moment in the church’s history came in 1861. It was here that the funeral of Camillo Benso, Count of Cavour, took place. A significant event, linking the Chiesa della Madonna degli Angeli to the very heart of Italian unification. So, the next time you pass the Chiesa della Madonna degli Angeli, remember its story. It’s a story of faith, resilience, and the enduring spirit of Turin.
