Mount Pleasant Church

In 1867, a journey of hope began. Freed slaves sought a new life in Alexandria. Mount Pleasant Church’s story is intertwined with their journey. A wealthy landowner, Charles H. Brown, saw their strength and character. He sold them 60 acres of land for homes. He and his wife donated an acre specifically for a church. This land was officially deeded on September 7, 1867. That same year, the first Mount Pleasant Church was built. It was a simple, one-room log building, built by hand. It served as both a place of worship on Sundays and a school during the week. The Mount Pleasant congregation grew steadily. The church building evolved with them. Four major renovations transformed the church. The original log structure was first expanded, doubling its size. Later, the wooden building was moved. A new brick building rose on the original site. This brick church was finished in 1931 and dedicated debt-free. Further additions included a choir loft and a pastor’s study. The current sanctuary of Mount Pleasant Church was completed in 1977. The mortgage was finally burned in April 1983. A piece of history was preserved in 1992. The old sanctuary was renamed the “Pinkett and Sheppard Memorial Chapel”. This honored two former pastors, Reverend Pinkett and Reverend Sheppard. Today, Mount Pleasant Baptist Church at 215 Rhode Island Avenue NW thrives under the leadership of Reverend Terry Daniel Streeter. He has served as pastor since 1989. His mission is to “Reach the World with the Gospel”. Reverend Streeter is known for his powerful preaching and teaching. He has shared his message across the United States and internationally.
