Hidden amongst the vibrant tapestry of Yuen Long District lies Tin Liu Tsuen. This walled village whispers tales of resilience and tradition. Tin Liu Tsuen, a historic Punti village, is nestled within the boundaries of Shap Pat Heung. This translates to “Eighteen Villages Alliance.” Tin Liu Tsuen itself was established by four distinct clans: Wu, Wong, Yip, and Sit. These families laid the foundations for a community that has endured through centuries. In the early 19th century, Tin Liu Tsuen was a vital part of this powerful alliance. Imagine the bustling activity as villagers from all eighteen settlements gathered to discuss matters of trade, defense, and community. In 1911, the village pulsed with the lives of 105 inhabitants. 48 of them were men. Life within these walls revolved around the main shrine dedicated to Tai Wong, the village’s protective deity. This shrine, rebuilt in 1935, stands on the central axis. It shares this prominent position with the entrance gate, a structure that was itself rebuilt in 1930. Both structures serve as testaments to the village’s enduring spirit and have been recognized as Grade III historic buildings. Today, Tin Liu Tsuen remains a testament to a bygone era. It provides a captivating glimpse into traditional village life in Hong Kong. The spirit of the four founding clans continues to resonate within its walls. It serves as a reminder of the rich cultural heritage preserved within the bustling metropolis of Hong Kong.
