Doesn’t the name Yung Shue Tsui just conjure images of ancient banyan trees reaching out to the sea? Yung Shue Tsui. It means “banyan tree pass”. This cape in Hong Kong has a story that stretches back centuries.

Yung Shue Tsui is close to the maritime border between Hong Kong and Shenzhen. Shenzhen was once a small fishing village. It has since transformed into a sprawling metropolis. The area’s history dates back thousands of years. Archaeological evidence suggests humans lived here in the Neolithic period.

The village of Yung Shue Au is near Yung Shue Tsui. It was founded by Wan Mein Cheong. He came from Huizhou. The villagers are descendants of Shu Yu. He was the son of King Wu of the Zhou Dynasty. Wan Chi Woon, the founder of Yung Shue Au village moved to Sha Tau Kok. His grandfather was Wan Ka Kei.

Since the 1970s villagers gradually moved out. There was a lack of arable land. Also, there was poor transportation. Some even immigrated.

In recent years, Yung Shue Au was rumored to be abandoned. People stole public and personal property. For this reason, the villagers decided to revitalize the village. They wanted to rebuild their homes. Yung Shue Tsui and its surrounding areas are seeing a revival. The spirit of the banyan tree pass lives on.
