The first mass. Can you imagine it? Right here on this very spot in 1554.

This is the Páttio Oratório. It’s more than just a pretty plaza. It’s the birthplace of São Paulo. The Jesuit priests Manuel da Nóbrega and José de Anchieta established a mission here. Their goal? To convert the local Indigenous people. They chose this strategic location. A hill between the Anhangabaú and Tamanduateí rivers. It offered protection and easy transport. They even had the support of the region’s chief Tibiriçá.

The original building a humble hut. It was quickly replaced with a more substantial structure of taipa de pilão rammed earth. This type of construction used mud straw and even blood and manure. Imagine the smell. This first college was a centre for both religious teaching and education.

Over the centuries the Páttio Oratório underwent many changes. It served as the seat of the Paulista government from 1765 to 1912. The colonial building underwent numerous reconstructions and demolitions. It even hosted the Paulista Assembly and the General Post Office. It was a bustling centre of civic and cultural life. Think elegant Sunday masses attended by the city’s elite. Imagine the sounds of streetcars and the lively chatter of people.

Today’s buildings are largely replicas. They’re based on old drawings and records. A single original wall remains a testament to the past. It’s made of that same taipa de pilão. The Páttio Oratório now houses the Museu Anchieta. It contains a fascinating collection of artifacts. You can even see part of Father Anchieta’s femur here.

The Marco da Paz the Peace Marker stands as a powerful symbol. Designed by an Italian who experienced the horrors of war. He wanted to honor São Paulo’s peaceful spirit. The obelisk’s 24-meter height represents the city’s enduring legacy. A woman on top symbolizes São Paulo itself. The base depicts the first mass.

The Páttio Oratório is more than just a historical site. It’s a living monument to São Paulo’s rich and complex history. A place where faith perseverance and resilience are deeply woven into the fabric of the city. It’s a place to reflect on the past. A place to celebrate the present and a place to look forward to the future.
