A temple built by Kobo Daishi himself. That’s what they say about Zen tsuji. Can you imagine the weight of that history?

Zen tsuji is more than just a temple. It’s a place steeped in centuries of tradition. Founded in 807 by Kobo Daishi the temple stands as a testament to his legacy. He established it on land donated by his father. The design mimicked Seiryuji Temple in Changan China. A fascinating detail isn’t it? A direct link to a faraway land.

The original buildings were destroyed during the Sengoku period. War is devastating. Many structures were lost to fire. Many were rebuilt over the years. The current Kondo Hall for instance was completed in 1699. Its main image a three-meter-tall seated Yakushi Nyorai. It’s a powerful sight.

Then there’s the five-storied pagoda. A 43-meter symbol of Zen tsuji. It’s been rebuilt multiple times after collapses and fires. The current structure finished in 1902. It houses statues of four Gochi Nyorai.

The Mieido Hall stands on the site of Kobo Daishi’s birthplace. It’s a special place filled with a palpable sense of history. This building houses a principal image of Mehiki Daishi. Kobo Daishi himself made it. The current structure is from 1831 but underwent renovations in 1937. Don’t miss the Kaidan Meguri a 100-meter tunnel beneath the hall. It’s said to remove evil.

This isn’t just a sightseeing spot. Zen tsuji is a living piece of history. It’s a place of worship. It’s a place of profound reflection. Feel the serenity and absorb the rich history of Zen tsuji. It’s a place that leaves a lasting impression on everyone who visits.
