Deep within the Vienna Woods, a hidden gem awaits discovery. It’s the Hohenauer Wiese, a place where nature’s symphony unfolds. Hohenauer Wiese is a vibrant tapestry of life. It’s a six-hectare haven owned by Klosterneuburg Abbey. This isn’t just any meadow. It’s a Smooth Bromegrass meadow, teeming with indicator species that thrive in its unique, moisture-rich soil. Look closely, and you’ll find the Tuberous Comfrey and Autumn Crocus. In damp areas, Reed Grass and Great Burnet paint the landscape. Multiple ponds, nestled within wetlands, provide a sanctuary for amphibians. The Yellow-bellied Toad and the Agile Frog call these ponds home. At the drier edges of the forest, you might even spot a Sand Lizard basking in the sun. Hohenauer Wiese faces a silent threat. Non-native plants, or neophytes, are encroaching upon this delicate ecosystem. The Lance-leaved Aster and Goldenrod, with their rapid growth, pose a particular danger. Efforts are underway to combat these invaders, ensuring the native flora and fauna can thrive. In July 2022, volunteers joined forces with the Biosphere Park Wienerwald and Klosterneuburg Abbey to tackle this challenge. They carefully removed the invasive plants. This dedicated effort helped maintain the biodiversity of Hohenauer Wiese. It was a testament to the power of community and the importance of preserving our natural heritage. The Hohenauer Wiese is more than just a meadow. It’s a story of resilience, a testament to the beauty of nature, and a call to protect the hidden treasures of the Vienna Woods.
