The Jiyu Theatre a small-scale space is dedicated to showcasing the Shiki Theatre Company’s productions. Primarily it features straight plays. It opened in November 2003 commemorating the company’s 50th anniversary. This wasn’t just any opening. It was a grand affair. The Jiyu Theatre welcomed approximately 5000 guests that night.
The theatre’s design is unique. Its stage and audience seating are unusually close. This intimacy creates a truly special experience for theatergoers. The stage itself is approximately 15 meters deep from the last row of seats. For the second level of seating it is about 11 meters. It’s similar in size to other Shiki Theatres. Yet it maintains a unique atmosphere.
Beyond the traditional straight plays the Jiyu Theatre also hosts various musical and theatrical performances. The company has presented numerous plays here. Many shows have had repeat performances. These include productions from Shiki Theatre Company itself. As well as guest productions from other companies.
