“Lost in time,” a hushed whisper escapes my lips as we stand before the ghostly shell of Zimní stadion. This isn’t the bustling arena that once echoed with the roar of crowds and the scrape of skates. Zimní stadion, once the heart of Czech hockey, now stands as a silent testament to a bygone era. Opened in 1932, Zimní stadion wasn’t just a building. It was a symbol of national pride, a cultural monument. Designed by architect Josef Fuchs, who also contributed to the Prague Trade Fair Palace, Zimní stadion originally boasted two ice surfaces. One for the fierce battles of hockey, the other for the graceful spins of public skaters. A café offered warmth and respite, while a gym and accommodation catered to athletes. Imagine the thrill of January 17, 1931, even before its official opening. The unfinished Zimní stadion hosted the first match on artificial ice in Czechoslovakia. LTC Prague clashed with a university team from Manitoba, Canada, as 7,000 spectators held their breath and the legendary Josef Laufer’s voice boomed over the radio waves. Zimní stadion witnessed the rise of hockey legends and figure-skating stars, including the iconic Ája Vrzáňová. It was the stage for four World Championships: 1933, 1938, 1947, and 1959. The echoes of those victories still linger in the crisp air. Another pioneering moment occurred at Zimní stadion in February 1955. It was the site of the first televised hockey match in Czechoslovakia. Prague battled the Swedish club IF Leksand. Originally, only two-thirds of the match was scheduled for broadcast, but an avalanche of enthusiastic calls flooded the television station, prompting them to air the entire game. Despite a major renovation in 1968, Zimní stadion began a slow decline. Sections closed, and the devastating floods of 2002 dealt a heavy blow. Although operation resumed, the stadium’s fate was sealed. In 2011, Zimní stadion was demolished, leaving behind a void in the city’s sporting landscape. But the memories, the victories, the spirit of Zimní stadion, those remain, etched in the hearts of those who witnessed its glory.
