Did the Guarani people foresee their land becoming a towering beacon? Here at Pico do Jaraguá, their ancestral grounds reach for the sky, marking the highest point in São Paulo at 1,135 meters. Pico do Jaraguá isn’t just a peak. It’s a story etched in stone and sky. The name itself whispers tales, meaning “Lord of the Valley” in the indigenous Tupi language. Imagine Afonso Sardinha, a bandeirante, stumbling upon glimmers of gold here in 1580. This discovery ignited conflict, as the native Guarani people defended their territory against the encroaching gold rush. The gold rush faded but the mountain remained. In the 20th century, Pico do Jaraguá transformed. It became a tourist destination in 1946 and then, in 1961, the Jaraguá State Park was established. This park protects the mountain’s natural beauty and preserves remnants of its past, including the ruins of Afonso Sardinha’s house and the gold-washing basins used by enslaved people. Today, television antennas share the summit, broadcasting their signals across the sprawling city below. You can even ascend to the top via a paved road or hike the scenic Trilha do Pai Zé. From the summit, the vastness of São Paulo unfolds, a panorama stretching westward, with the Rodoanel Mário Covas visible in the distance. Close your eyes and imagine the mountain echoing with the Guarani language, their lives interwoven with this peak long before antennas and tourists arrived. Pico do Jaraguá stands as a silent witness, a testament to the layers of history shaped by nature, ambition, and the enduring spirit of the Guarani.
