Picture a bustling marketplace a vibrant tapestry of sights sounds and scents. This is Yuen Long a historic town nestled in the heart of Hong Kong’s New Territories. For centuries Yuen Long has been a vital trading hub. Its strategic location on a fertile plain allowed farmers to easily sell their produce. Fishermen brought their daily catches to market. The town thrived.

Yuen Long’s rich history stretches back to the Sung Dynasty over 900 years ago. The Tang and Man clans were among the earliest settlers. They established deep roots in the area. Their influence is still visible today in the area’s ancestral halls.

Let’s explore Ping Shan a remarkable area within Yuen Long. Here you’ll discover a treasure trove of historical buildings. The Ping Shan Heritage Trail meanders past meticulously preserved structures. Start at the Tsui Sing Lau Pagoda. This three-story pagoda is over 600 years old. It is a testament to Hong Kong’s rich past. It’s said to be Hong Kong’s only ancient pagoda.

The trail winds through Sheung Cheung Wai a walled village. This village showcases the ingenuity of its builders. Its walls offered protection from pirates a very real threat in the region’s history. You might even see a modern-day postman on his bicycle. A true throwback to older times.

Next you will find the Yeung Hau Temple a small open-air structure. It houses three distinct sections each dedicated to a different Chinese deity. It is a fascinating glimpse into the town’s spiritual life.

The highlight of the trail is undoubtedly the Tang Ancestral Hall and the Yi Kiu Ancestral Hall. These magnificent halls stand side-by-side. They are symbols of the enduring power and influence of the Tang clan. This clan is one of the oldest in Hong Kong. The halls are incredibly well-preserved. They are used for celebrations and religious ceremonies to this day. The Yi Kiu Ancestral Hall once served as a school for young Tang family members.

Nearby is the Kun Ting Study Hall. This hall prepared local students for the prestigious imperial civil service examinations. These exams were crucial to advancement in Imperial China. Doing well meant a high government post and great honour for the family and village. The Chung Shu Hin guest house nearby offered lodging for students studying at the Kun Ting Study Hall. It featured a beautiful open-air courtyard. The preserved kitchen and bathroom in the guesthouse offer a window into daily life in the 1940s and 50s in Hong Kong.

The final stop on the trail is the Hung Shing Temple. Just outside you’ll find tablets commemorating Tang clan members who excelled in the imperial exams. There’s even a modern addition. It celebrates a Tang family member who graduated from Harvard Medical School.
