Amidst the towering skyscrapers of Tokyo, lies a tranquil oasis called Zōjō-ji Temple. Do you feel the subtle shift in energy as we step onto these sacred grounds? Zōjō-ji Temple, a place of significant historical importance, stands as a testament to the enduring power of the Tokugawa shogunate. Established in 1598 by Tokugawa Ieyasu, this temple complex served as the family temple of the Tokugawa clan. Imagine the bustling activity as Zōjō-ji became a key administrative center for the Jōdo sect of Buddhism. It oversaw religious studies and activities throughout the region. Sadly, much of the original complex was destroyed during World War II. Yet, one iconic structure miraculously survived. The Sangedatsumon, the main gate of Zōjō-ji Temple, stands tall in vibrant red. It has weathered fires, earthquakes, and war since its construction in 1622. This magnificent gate is a designated Important Cultural Property. A visit to Zōjō-ji offers a glimpse into the past. Six Tokugawa shoguns rest within the temple grounds. Their mausoleum, adorned with fierce dragons, stands as a tribute to their legacy. Descend into the basement of the temple hall to explore the small museum. Here, you can discover a model of the Taitoku-in Mausoleum. See how the Tokugawa mausoleum looked in its full glory before the ravages of war. You can also see works of art. The works of the renowned Buddhist scroll painter, Kanō Kazunobu, are on display in the Treasure Gallery, which opened in 2015. Venture outside the Treasure Gallery to find a quiet garden with rows of jizō statues. These poignant figures represent children lost before birth. Parents decorate these statues with clothing and toys, offering comfort and hope for a peaceful journey into the afterlife. Zōjō-ji Temple, in the shadow of the modern Tokyo Tower, offers a profound connection to Japan’s rich history.
