Have you ever seen a mountain rise from a flat landscape? You might think that is impossible. But look around! The Buštěhradská halda stands before us. It dominates the landscape like a giant. Many people mistake it for a natural hill. However, this imposing structure is entirely man-made. Buštěhradská halda, located near the town of Kladno, started growing after World War II. For decades, it served as a dumping ground for the region’s industrial waste. It mainly consisted of slag from the Kladno steel mills. But it also contained waste from other industries. In the 1980s, a tragic incident occurred on the slopes of Buštěhradská halda. A group of children playing on the seemingly harmless hill were overcome by toxic fumes. This event brought to light the hidden dangers lurking within the halda. It sparked public outcry. And it ultimately led to the closure of the site for dumping. Today, Buštěhradská halda stands as a silent giant. It is a reminder of the area’s industrial past. And the environmental challenges that come with it.
