Deep within Peers Cave shadows dance. This imposing cave sits high above the Fish Hoek valley. Its south-facing position protects it from Cape Town’s harsh winter winds. Peers Cave is more than just a cave. It’s a window into South Africa’s rich past.

The story of Peers Cave begins with Victor Stanley Peers and his son Bertie. These two men weren’t archaeologists. They were a railway worker and his son. But they shared a passion for uncovering history. Between 1927 and 1929 they excavated Peers Cave. They used picks shovels and even dynamite. The marks of their explosions are still visible on the walls.

Their work uncovered a treasure trove of artifacts. A shell midden up to 1.5 meters thick held the remains of six people. Two nearly complete female skeletons and four children. These were buried with amazing items. Marine-shell pendants ostrich-eggshell beads and bone awls. They even found a small leather bag filled with herbs.

Further down they found two more skeletons. These were from the Stillbay period. Then deeper still they unearthed the famous Fish Hoek Man. Initially believed to be from the Middle Stone Age this discovery caused a sensation. Experts flocked to see this rare find. Sir Arthur Keith a British anatomist described him. He was a male about 30 years old and 1.57 meters tall.

However later dating revealed Fish Hoek Man’s age. He actually lived much more recently. His remains were far younger than first thought. This changed the significance of the discovery. The Peers’ methods were not perfect. They didn’t document their work well. Much of the material was lost. Tens of thousands of artifacts were discarded. They are still on the slope today.

Tragically Bertie died in 1939. He was bitten by a snake. Victor died the following year. Their work left a legacy. One that is both remarkable and heartbreaking. Peers Cave today is a shadow of its former self. The rock paintings are gone. Graffiti mars its walls. The cave’s treasures are scattered. Yet its story persists. A reminder of the past and the fragile nature of discovery. It’s a story of passion flawed methods and a lost history. It speaks to the ongoing debate on how we interact with and preserve our shared history.
