In 1892, the Former Ritz Nursing Home first opened its doors. It wasn’t a nursing home then. It began as the Leura Estate. Let’s step back in time and explore the fascinating journey of this historic building in Leura. Initially known as the Leura Estate, the property transitioned into “The Leura Hotel and Coffee Palace Limited” in 1890. By 1895, with a newly acquired colonial wine license, it was rechristened “The Palace.” The name “The Ritz” emerged in 1913, marking its primary use as a hotel. The Former Ritz Nursing Home played a vital role during World War II. From 1941 to 1946, the building served as a military convalescent hospital under the management of the Red Cross. After the war, the Former Ritz Nursing Home returned to its hotel function, continuing in this capacity until 1969 under the ownership of Sydney Brewers Tooth & Co. A significant shift occurred in 1970. The Former Ritz Nursing Home was converted into a 150-bed nursing home, operating under the name “The Ritz Nursing Home”. This chapter lasted until 2018 when its accreditation was withdrawn due to failures in quality of care, leading to its closure. Today, the Former Ritz Nursing Home stands as a silent testament to its layered past. A $37 million rejuvenation project is underway, aiming to transform the estate into Pathways Leura Village. This new facility plans to incorporate the historical significance of the Former Ritz Nursing Home while offering modern aged care services. It’s a story of transformation, resilience, and the enduring legacy of a building that has witnessed significant moments in history.
