Born in Warsaw on January 23 1905 Konstanty Ildefons Gałczyński’s life was a whirlwind of creativity. He lived a life full of adventures. He was a Polish poet known for his absurdist humor. We stand here near where he spent his childhood.

This was a time of great change in Poland. His family experienced the upheaval of World War I. They were evacuated from Warsaw to Moscow. There young Konstanty attended a Polish school. He developed his love for poetry in Russia. He returned to Warsaw in 1918. He studied classics and English at the University of Warsaw. His dissertation was on a fictional Scottish poet.

His literary debut came in 1923. He became a member of the Kwadryga group of poets. He contributed to satirical and political publications. He was a man of many talents. His work extended far beyond poetry. In 1930 he married Natalia Awałow. Their marriage lasted until his death. From 1931-1933 he served as a cultural attaché in Berlin. This experience broadened his horizons. His perspective shaped his future work. Later he lived in Vilnius. His daughter Kira was born there in 1936. Many of his works reflect the atmosphere of Vilnius.

World War II brought more upheaval. He was drafted into the Polish army. He participated in the September Campaign of 1939. He became a prisoner of war. He was captured by the Soviets then the Germans. He spent time in a prisoner-of-war camp. He continued writing poetry in secret. His poems were published in underground anthologies.

After the war he traveled to Brussels and Paris. He returned to Poland in 1946. He established the 13 Muses Club in Szczecin. Later he moved back to Warsaw. His works were featured in numerous weekly magazines. Many of his postwar works were written according to socialist realist conventions. In 1950 he became a target of ideological battles. His work was denounced as petit bourgeois.

His later years were productive. He wrote large poetic forms like “Jan Sebastian Bach’s Easter” “Niobe” “Wit Stwosz” and “Olsztyn Chronicle”. He published volumes of poetry including “Enchanted Droshky” “Wedding Rings” and “Songs”. He also translated Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” and Schiller’s “Ode to Joy”.

He was portrayed in Czesław Miłosz’s “The Captive Mind” under the name Delta. He died on December 6 1953 at the age of 48 following a heart attack. His legacy lives on. His poetry inspires musicians. Many songs are based on his poems. Many schools and institutions are named after him.
