Picture crumbling stones whispering tales of industry. Welcome to Lanes Mill Ruins a testament to Fairfax County’s rich past. Here at the confluence of Rocky Run and Cub Run stand the remnants of a bustling 18th-century complex. James Lane Jr and his son William built two mills and a distillery around 1760. The rushing water powered their enterprise. Wheat became flour. Trees transformed into lumber. Grains and fruits yielded whiskey and brandies. Clever use of both creeks ensured water even during low flow. Imagine the rhythmic sounds of grinding stones and whirring gears. These woods once rang with the activity of human endeavor.

James Lane’s brother William Carr Lane owned the Newgate Tavern. Perhaps he served his brother’s liquors there. William was so impressed he bought a mill himself further upstream. That mill Cabell’s Mill still stands today a silent yet enduring witness. The Lanes’ distillery closed by the 1830s. The family held onto the mills until 1857 when Nestor Kincheloe purchased them. He passed the ownership to William B Kincheloe who held it until his death in 1900.

James Pendleton Robinson took over the grist mill under Kincheloe ownership. He ran the mill until 1924. He also operated a store serving the nearby African American community. His grandfather James “Gentleman Jim” Robinson was also a prominent figure in Prince William County after emancipation. The mill became known as Robinson’s Mill. Even today Lanes Mill Ruins stand as a reminder of this vibrant history. The Fairfax County Park Authority protects these silent remains. They are a legacy of ingenuity entrepreneurship and community. This peaceful site offers a glimpse into a time of water-powered industry and industrious families. Take a moment to reflect on the echoes of history resonating within these old stones. Remember to leave only your footprints.
