Gazing across Marley Lagoon, can you envision the colossal sand dunes rising over 500 meters behind it? These dunes at Marley Lagoon cover a staggering 130,000 square meters. They form a dramatic backdrop to the 360-meter curve of Marley Beach, also called Big Marley. Marley Lagoon itself drains into the ocean via Marley Creek, which flows across the beach’s northern tip. Marley Beach, exposed to powerful southeast swells and southerly winds, is a surfer’s paradise when the wind cooperates. It’s also a popular fishing spot, both from the rocks and the beach itself. But be warned, the permanent rips make Marley Beach the most hazardous unpatrolled beach in the Royal National Park according to Surf Life Saving Australia. Swimming here requires caution. Marley Lagoon holds a somber piece of maritime history. In May 1919, the S.S. Tuggerah, a steam-powered collier, met its fate just two kilometers offshore. Caught in a violent storm, the ship capsized, claiming the lives of six crew members, including the captain. The wreck remained undiscovered for over fifty years, finally being found in 1972. Today, the S.S. Tuggerah serves as a popular diving site for experienced divers, a silent testament to the power of the sea near Marley Lagoon.
