“Over fifty-five years” feels like just yesterday for the Church of the Ascension. This Anglican church has been a cornerstone of the Don Mills community. It actively seeks to grow in God’s love. It demonstrates Christ’s greatness.
The story of the Church of the Ascension begins with a dream suburb. In 1953, work began to transform Don Mills. Modern homes and spacious areas attracted families. Many of these families were Anglicans seeking a place to worship and connect.
Early services were intimate. They were held in Dr. W. Gooderham’s home starting in October 1954. As the congregation grew, services moved to Don Mills School. Rev. W. Leach led these gatherings. Later, they moved again to Bethesda United Church.
A significant moment arrived on September 2, 1956. Rev. George Thompson conducted the first service in the Church of the Ascension. He was a dedicated shepherd. Rev. Thompson walked the muddy streets. He knocked on doors. He welcomed newcomers to the church.
The Church of the Ascension continued to expand. In 1963-64, the parish hall was added. This hall became a versatile space. It hosted youth groups and Sunday school. Badminton games and dinner dances filled its rooms. Rummage sales and coffee hours fostered fellowship after services. It even served as a food bank. The hall includes a kitchen and an office. It has a connecting passage to Thompson House Seniors Residence.
The Church of the Ascension developed a strong connection with seniors. It became very involved in the Don Mills Foundation for Seniors. This foundation oversees Thompson House. It is a long-term care facility. It also manages Taylor Place. This is a day center for seniors. The church originally sold the land to the DMF for construction. This act solidified their ongoing relationship.
The church established a special program. It’s called Christian companions. Volunteers visit resident members regularly.
Since 1955, the Church of the Ascension has had five priests. There were also a few interim leaders. Rev. Cannon Thompson guided the early years. Rev. B. Brightling followed. Cannon Logan Varey continued the spiritual leadership. Rev. Cannon Murray Henderson led the church. In early 2009, Rev. Nicholas Morkel became the incumbent. The Church of the Ascension continues its mission.
