But let’s go back a bit. New Jerusalem Baptist Church purchased this building in July 2017. It was a significant step for their growing congregation. New Jerusalem Baptist Church has a rich history of its own.

It began in February 1982. The late Arthur O Crowley Jr organized it. He pastored for 18 years. His theme was clear. “Maturing the Saved to Save the Lost.” His knowledge was vast and his compassion was deep.

The church first gathered at Columbia Park Elementary School. For three years they worshipped there. In 1985, they secured a loan to purchase property on Camden Street. Maple Springs Baptist Church supported this ministry greatly.

By September 1991 the mortgage was fully paid. The ministry included many dedicated people. There was the pastor an assistant ministers deacons trustees and auxiliaries. The church provided much needed assistance. They offered food clothing medical care and rental aid.

Volunteers witnessed door to door in the area. Over 5000 homes were visited on a rotational cycle. God blessed the church under Pastor Crowley. It grew from just two members to many. Even after his passing his legacy continued. Rev William R Benjamin served as interim pastor.

In March 2000, a new chapter began. Rev Michael L Miller became the pastor. He came from Israel Baptist Church in Washington D.C. His installation service was held on April 30. Under his leadership the church continued to grow.

New Jerusalem Baptist Church met the needs of its members and community. A scholarship was created. It honored the late Pastor Crowley. The church adopted Columbia Park Elementary School. They provided Thanksgiving baskets to families in need.

A Director of Christian Education was appointed. Ministers were licensed. Deacons were ordained. Trustees were appointed. An assistant to the pastor was chosen. Pastor Miller led the purchase of additional property.

An Outreach Ministry was established. It served at local shelters. The church participated in the Angel Tree Program. They adopted families for Christmas.

Pastor Miller prayed for continued growth. He wanted growth in teaching worship evangelism discipleship prayer and fellowship. His desire was for a church after God’s own heart. This dream led them here to Walker Mill Road. Walker Mill Baptist Church stands as a testament to faith community and growth.
