“Unexpected oasis” likely springs to mind now. We’re standing at Modřanské laguny. This natural area offers a surprising escape within Prague.
Modřanské laguny are a series of pools near the Vltava River. They provide a habitat for diverse wildlife. Imagine this area in the 19th century. The pools weren’t for nature then. They were built to improve river navigation. These pools helped concentrate the river’s flow. This made it easier for boats to pass.
Over time nature reclaimed the area. The pools transformed into a valuable wetland ecosystem. Today Modřanské laguny are a protected natural monument since 2014. It is a haven for plants and animals.
Look around. You might spot a beaver. Listen for the song of the common nightingale. Keep an eye out for the middle spotted woodpecker. You could also see a kingfisher flash by. The lagoons host various amphibians and reptiles too. Several types of frogs and toads live here. You might even spot grass snakes.
These waters are home to rare plants. One notable example is the fanleaf waterlily. Explore the surrounding area. You’ll find willow forests and meadows. These habitats support a range of life. The Komořanský stream divides Modřanské laguny into two parts. The northern part is Modřanské tůně. The southern part is Komořanské tůně. Some consider only the northern part to be Modřanské laguny. But both sections share a similar history and environment.
A blue hiking trail passes through the Komořany section. It is accompanied by the educational trail “We Count on Water.” The trail provides information about the area’s ecology. It also highlights the importance of water. The Modřany section is accessible via a cycle path.
Interestingly the pools weren’t created as flood protection. This is a common misconception. The pools’ small size wouldn’t significantly reduce flood risk. Occasional floods are actually beneficial. They flush out sediments. This helps to naturally renew the pools. Without floods the pools would need artificial dredging.
Until the construction of the Modřany weir in 1984-85 the water level was significantly lower. The weir raised the water level by about 2 meters. The southernmost pool effectively became a dead arm of the river due to this.
