“Do you hear that angelic choir?” That is often how visitors describe the experience upon entering St. John’s Episcopal Church in Tampa. This historic church stands proudly in the Hyde Park neighborhood. It is a beacon of faith and community.

St. John’s Episcopal Church has a rich history that dates back to the early 20th century. Its story began as St. John’s by the Sea Episcopal Mission in 1912. It started in a modest wood building. By 1917, it had grown into a parish with 108 communicants.

Construction of the present masonry building began in 1924. The Mediterranean-inspired design includes a dominant bell tower. This tower is a signature feature of the church’s front facade. The church and a new pipe organ were dedicated in 1928.

The congregation worked hard. By 1944, the mortgage was completely paid off. The building was then consecrated. The exterior and interior architectural details have been preserved.

In 1949, St. John’s broke ground on a new parish hall. This was a significant step. The hall provided space for various activities. It included an auditorium, classrooms, and offices. In 1951, the new parish hall allowed for a new Day School.

The Day School expanded over the years. It added second and third grades in 1952. Father George Burchill was hired as headmaster in 1954. He ushered in a new era for the school. Eventually, seventh and eighth grades were added.

In 1961, a decision was made to drop junior high classes. This allowed for more space for elementary students. The goal was to increase elementary enrollment.

The church purchased additional property in 1970. This property housed the Primary Division. Junior high school classes returned to the campus in the late 1970s. By 1980, there were 418 students.

As South Tampa grew, St. John’s needed more space. In 2000, the church purchased an office building. This became the new location for the Middle Division in 2001.

Today, St. John’s continues to thrive. It is a vibrant parish with a strong sense of community. The church is known for its Anglican Choral tradition. You can experience this during their Sunday services. They offer both Rite I and Rite II Holy Eucharist services.

St. John’s is also dedicated to outreach. It has a long-standing relationship with the Episcopal Diocese of the Dominican Republic. The church sends youth and adult missions to support their Dominican brothers and sisters.

St. John’s Episcopal Church is more than just a building. It is a place where people come together to worship, learn, and serve. It is a community that welcomes all. As you stand here, consider the countless stories. These stories have unfolded within these walls. The church is a testament to the enduring power of faith. It shows the strength of community in the heart of Tampa.
