A church built during the Great Depression. That’s quite a story isn’t it? Welcome to Wheaton Woods Church. Or rather I should say welcome to where Wheaton Woods Church once stood. For you see this wasn’t always Wheaton Woods Church. This land has witnessed a lot. The original Wheaton Bible Church began in 1929. A group of 160 people signed a charter. They formed a new independent church. They met on the Wheaton College campus. Times were tough. The stock market crashed. The Great Depression began. The church persevered. In 1934 they called their first pastor Kenneth A Amsler. They renamed themselves Wheaton Bible Church. Their faith was based on the Bible. They believed it was the inspired infallible and inviolable Word of God. In 1935 they bought land in Wheaton Illinois. Members sacrificed. They raised $30000 for a new building. They dedicated it in March 1936. Sunday school overflowed. People came forward to accept Christ. The church continued to grow. They started other churches. Countryside Chapel Evangel Baptist Church and The Village Church of Carol Stream. They added buildings a new sanctuary. They expanded their ministries. They served faithfully. Pastors came and went each leaving their mark. The church grew and changed. They even built a new campus in West Chicago. They launched new initiatives. They served their community. They supported missionaries around the world. They expanded their outreach. The church continued to adapt. They faced challenges. They celebrated victories. They remained faithful to their mission. Love God grow together and reach the world. Wheaton Bible Church’s story isn’t just about buildings. It’s a testament to faith resilience and the enduring power of community. A story written not only in stone but in the hearts of countless individuals who have been touched by its ministry. So while we stand here today on land once occupied by Wheaton Bible Church its spirit lives on. Its legacy continues to inspire. Its impact resonates.
