A cornerstone laid in 1937 marks the beginning of a spiritual home. Today we stand before Guildford Anglican Church. It’s more than just bricks and mortar. This church is a testament to community faith.

Guildford Anglican Church stands on the corner of Guildford Road and Bolton Street. Its history is intertwined with the growth of Guildford. The suburb itself was named in 1837. It was named in honour of the Earl of Guildford.

Before European settlement, the Dharug people called this land home. The Bidjigal clan lived around what is now Guildford. They were the traditional owners of this area.

In 1817, Lieutenant Samuel North received a land grant. He named his property Guildford. This was due to his ties with the Earl of Guildford. A small hamlet began to grow. By 1870, a school opened. In the 1880s, a church was also built.

The current Guildford Anglican Church building dates back to 1934. It was built in the Gothic style. A foundation stone was set on April 17, 1937. The Most Reverend Howard West Kilvinton Mowll DD Archbishop of Sydney laid it. The wardens were RM Elner, E Rohan, and WM Squair. A.J. Dyer was the Rector.

Guildford has become a multicultural hub. After the Lebanese civil war in the 1970s, many Arabic speakers settled here. Guildford became one of Australia’s most multicultural places. This rich mix of cultures adds to the vibrant community of Guildford Anglican Church.

The church has seen many clergy members over the years. Rev John William Ferrier served as a Catechist from 1910. Rev Frederick Archibald Reed served from 1913 to 1917. Rev Joseph Poole was a Curate. He served from 1924 to 1935. Rev Alfred John Dyer served from 1935 to 1940.
