Alois Schaffer. A name whispered among art enthusiasts, echoing through the halls of Vienna’s Kunsthistorisches Museum. Here, before this simple wayside cross, we remember not just a man, but a legacy woven into the very fabric of Vienna’s artistic heritage. Alois Schaffer von Wienwald, a man of many titles: landscape painter, curator, director, and ultimately, nobleman. Born in Vienna in 1833, Schaffer’s life was a testament to the city’s vibrant art scene. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts, honing his skills under the tutelage of Franz Steinfeld. His journeys across Europe, from the Alps to the North Sea, fueled his artistic vision, inspiring breathtaking landscapes that captured the essence of nature’s beauty. Schaffer’s connection to the Kunsthistorisches Museum began in 1881 as a curator. He meticulously cataloged and preserved priceless works of art, laying the groundwork for a more scientific approach to museum management. In 1892, he stepped into the role of Director, succeeding Eduard von Engerth. Schaffer’s directorship was marked by a conservative acquisition policy, carefully selecting pieces that would enrich the museum’s collection for generations to come. Beyond the museum walls, Schaffer was an active member of the Vienna Künstlerhaus, even penning a history of the organization. His dedication to the arts extended to his personal life. He married Emilie Hoffmann, an opera singer, and later, after her passing, Auguste Wahrmund, a painter and writer. In 1912, Schaffer’s contributions to the arts were recognized with his elevation to the aristocracy, becoming “August Schaeffer Edler von Wienwald”. This wayside cross serves as a quiet reminder of Schaffer’s lasting impact on Vienna’s artistic landscape. A man who dedicated his life to the preservation and celebration of beauty, whose legacy continues to inspire awe within the hallowed halls of the Kunsthistorisches Museum.
