Lost in the bustling heart of Shinjuku, Sainenji Temple whispers tales of warriors and remembrance. Here, amidst the modern cityscape, stands a tranquil oasis, a testament to a time of feudal lords and legendary ninjas. Sainenji Temple isn’t just a temple. It’s a time capsule, connecting us to the Sengoku period, a time of constant warfare and shifting alliances. The temple was founded in 1594 by Hattori Hanzo, not the mythical ninja often portrayed, but a skilled samurai and loyal servant of Tokugawa Ieyasu. Originally named Anyoin, the temple began as a humble hermitage in Kojimachi. It later found its current home in Shinjuku, a move necessitated by the expansion of Edo Castle. Sainenji Temple holds the memory of Matsudaira Nobuyasu, Ieyasu’s eldest son, close to its heart. Tragically, Nobuyasu was forced to commit seppuku, a ritual suicide, on the orders of Oda Nobunaga. Hattori Hanzo, deeply affected by this loss, dedicated himself to prayer and remembrance, building a memorial tower within Sainenji’s grounds for the fallen lord. The temple also serves as the final resting place for Hanzo himself, his grave marked by a large stone pagoda bearing his Buddhist name, Senshoinden Anyo Saien Daizenjomon. Within Sainenji Temple rests a tangible piece of history: a spear, said to have been gifted to Hanzo by Ieyasu himself. Nicknamed “Spear Hanzo” for his mastery of the weapon, this chipped and shortened spear is a treasured artifact, registered as a tangible cultural property of Shinjuku Ward. Sainenji Temple stands as a poignant reminder of loyalty, loss, and the enduring power of memory in the heart of Tokyo. It’s a place where the whispers of history intertwine with the rhythm of modern life, inviting us to pause and reflect on the stories etched within its sacred grounds.
