Kara Mustafa Pasha’s coffee was getting cold. That’s what I like to imagine as we stand before the Franz Georg Kolschitzky Statue. This statue commemorates the man who, according to legend, introduced coffee to Vienna. The Franz Georg Kolschitzky Statue depicts him in traditional Polish attire, a nod to his heritage. He holds a tray laden with steaming cups of coffee. It’s a fitting tribute to the man who, according to legend, single-handedly changed the culinary landscape of Vienna.

The Franz Georg Kolschitzky Statue stands as a reminder of a pivotal moment in Viennese history: the Siege of Vienna in 1683. The city was surrounded by Ottoman forces. Supplies were dwindling, and hope was fading. Enter Jerzy Franciszek Kulczycki, as he was known in Polish, a merchant, diplomat, and spy fluent in several languages, including Turkish. He bravely volunteered to slip through enemy lines, disguised as a Turk, and seek help from Duke Charles of Lorraine.

Accompanied by his servant, Đorđe Mihajlović, Kulczycki successfully navigated the Ottoman camps, singing Turkish songs to maintain his cover. He reached the Duke, secured the promise of reinforcements, and returned to the besieged city with the good news. This act of courage boosted the morale of the Viennese and contributed to their resolve to withstand the siege until the arrival of the Polish King John III Sobieski and his forces. The siege was broken, and Kulczycki became a hero.

As a reward for his bravery, Kulczycki received a substantial sum of money and a house. King Sobieski gifted him something even more valuable: sacks of coffee beans left behind by the retreating Ottoman army. Legend says that with these beans, Kulczycki opened Vienna’s first coffee house, the “Hof zur Blauen Flasche” (House under the Blue Bottle), popularizing the beverage and establishing a Viennese tradition. However, more recent sources suggest that the first coffeehouse was actually opened by an Armenian named Johannes Theodat a few years later. Regardless of who truly opened the first coffee house, Kulczycki’s role in bringing coffee to Vienna is still celebrated.

The Franz Georg Kolschitzky Statue serves not only as a memorial to a courageous individual but also as a symbol of Vienna’s rich coffee house culture. It’s a reminder of how a single act of bravery, fueled by a hot cup of, well, perhaps not coffee at the time, helped shape the city’s identity. So next time you savor a Viennese Melange, remember the legacy of Franz Georg Kolschitzky, the man who, according to legend, started it all.
