“Lystum,” they called it back in 1292. Today, we know it as List auf Sylt. This northernmost municipality in Germany sits on the beautiful island of Sylt. It’s a place shaped by wind, sea, and sand.

List auf Sylt boasts a fascinating history. Originally a Danish settlement, List was destroyed by a great flood in 1364. The villagers rebuilt it further east. For centuries, List remained part of the Kingdom of Denmark. It was an enclave within the Duchy of Schleswig. Imagine small areas of Denmark controlled directly by the Danish king. This lasted until after the Danish-German War in 1864. Then, List became part of Prussia.

Life in List was tough but resourceful. People farmed oysters. They raised sheep. They collected and sold gull eggs. List even served as a protective anchorage. In 1644, a Swedish-Dutch fleet was defeated by Danish ships here. This victory led to naming the anchorage north of town Königshafen or King’s Harbour.

List saw significant changes in the 20th century. During World War I, it became a naval air base. The Nazis expanded military installations in the 1930s. This dramatically increased the town’s population. After World War II, List housed displaced Germans. The navy returned in 1955.

Today, tourism dominates List’s economy. The military influence has faded, but the town’s spirit remains. List is known for its stunning landscape. Dunes and heath surround the village.
