Founded in 1925 the Abendgymnasium Wien is one of Europe’s oldest evening schools. It’s a remarkable institution. This is where dreams of further education become reality. Many students juggle work and family life. They find support and understanding here.

The Abendgymnasium Wien wasn’t always located here on Brünner Straße. Its history is rich. It started with preparatory courses. Wanda Lanzer and apprentices from the Mollardgasse vocational school created these. They aimed to help people gain the necessary qualifications for a secondary school leaving certificate. In 1925 the courses gained official approval. Arthur Pollak led this pioneering effort.

Sadly World War II interrupted its progress. The school closed in 1939. However the spirit of learning persevered. In 1945 it reopened. This time as an “Workers’ Secondary School”. Social partners supported its revival. It became a public school in 1960. Alfred Bohmann and Ferdinand Hübner were key figures in its reconstruction.

Throughout its existence the Abendgymnasium Wien has adapted. In the 1990s under director Oskar Achs the study duration shortened to eight semesters. A distance learning program was introduced in 2010/11 under Klaus Brandl. The modular system followed. This innovative system prevents students from failing a year. The move to Brünner Straße 72 in 2014/15 marked another chapter in its history. It had been located at Henriettenplatz for decades. For a few years it also occupied a space at Singrienergasse 21.

Today the Abendgymnasium Wien thrives. Around 2000 students attend. It offers a broad curriculum. It accommodates various learning styles. It emphasizes flexibility. This caters to the students’ diverse backgrounds and needs. The school offers morning afternoon and evening classes. A distance learning option exists as well. The school is free.

Languages such as English Latin French Spanish Russian and Turkish are available. The Abendgymnasium Wien provides more than just education. It offers a sense of community. It helps students achieve their goals. It has helped thousands to achieve their dreams. Its commitment to adult education remains strong. It celebrates its centennial in 2023. The Abendgymnasium Wien stands as a testament to lifelong learning. This place helps people fulfill their potential. It is a vital part of Vienna’s educational landscape.
