Curious about a university that sprouted from humble beginnings? That’s the Australian Catholic University. ACU opened its doors on January 1 1991. It wasn’t a new creation entirely. It was the result of four Catholic tertiary institutions joining forces.
Think of these four as the seeds. They were Catholic College of Education Sydney. There was also the Institute of Catholic Education in Victoria. McAuley College in Queensland was another. Don’t forget Signadou College of Education in the Australian Capital Territory.
These original institutions have stories dating back to the mid-1800s. Religious orders played a vital role then. They focused on training teachers for Catholic schools. Later they trained nurses for Catholic hospitals.
Over time these institutions evolved. They experienced amalgamations and relocations. Responsibilities shifted and diocesan initiatives emerged. More than 20 historical entities contributed to what ACU is today.
ACU is more than just its history. Zlatko Skrbis is the Vice-Chancellor and President. He guides the university both nationally and internationally. He provides strategic leadership and management.
ACU has a presence across Australia. There are seven campuses. You’ll find them in Ballarat, Brisbane, and Canberra. Melbourne and Sydney also host campuses. Sydney has campuses in Blacktown, North Sydney, and Strathfield. ACU even has a Leadership Centre in Adelaide and Townsville. In 2015, the university expanded internationally. It opened the Rome Centre in Italy. This was a collaboration with the Catholic University of America.
The Mount St Mary Campus in Strathfield is special. It’s recognized as a heritage-listed site.
ACU is a member of several important organizations. It is part of the publicly funded national system of Australian universities. It also belongs to the Association of Commonwealth Universities. ACU is also a member of the International Federation of Catholic Universities.
The Australian Catholic University motto is “Truth in love”. In 2023, ACU had a budget of A$491.81 million. There were 32,283 students in 2023. Of those students, 25,037 were undergraduates. There were also 5,841 postgraduate coursework students. Additionally, there were 290 postgraduate research students.
ACU offers a variety of sporting activities. The university hosts the annual ACU Games. Students compete in the Australian University Games too.
ACU has produced some notable alumni. Matt Burke is a former international rugby union player. Ellie Cole is a paralympic swimmer. Ben Cummins is a former rugby league referee. Kristina Keneally is a politician. So is John Kennedy.
ACU continues to evolve. It upholds its commitment to truth and love. The Australian Catholic University is dedicated to knowledge.
