Beneath the watchful gaze of Saint Wenceslas, we gather. The Statue of Saint Wenceslas is not just a sculpture. It is a symbol etched into the heart of Prague.

The Statue of Saint Wenceslas stands tall. It is at the upper end of Wenceslas Square. This square has been the administrative and commercial heart of the city since the 1300s.

Josef V. Myslbek created this bronze statue. It was unveiled in 1913. The Statue of Saint Wenceslas depicts Wenceslas I. He was Duke of Bohemia. He is mounted on a warhorse. The statue itself is 5.5 meters tall. His pike reaches 7.2 meters.

Saint Wenceslas was known for his piety and kindness. He was murdered by his younger brother in 929. Miracles occurred at his burial site. He was canonized soon after. He became the patron saint of the Czechs.

Look closely at the base of the statue. Four smaller statues surround Saint Wenceslas. These figures represent other Czech saints. Saint Ludmila is among them. Also Saint Agnes of Bohemia. We see Saint Prokop. And Saint Adalbert of Prague.

Alois Dryák designed the statue base. It includes a powerful inscription. It reads: “Saint Wenceslas, duke of the Czech land, prince of ours, do not let perish us nor our descendants”.

The Statue of Saint Wenceslas has witnessed history. The Czechs celebrated their independence here in 1918. They also celebrated regaining it in 1989. This square is a place of gathering. It is for important events.

Consider the square’s history. It was once a horse market. In 1848, it was renamed Saint Wenceslas Square. Karel Havlíček Borovský proposed the name.

This area has seen dark times too. Jan Palach set himself on fire here in 1969. He protested the Soviet invasion.

The Statue of Saint Wenceslas stands at the southeast end of the square. The National Museum is behind it. The museum has over 14 million items of Czech history.

Note the mix of architectural styles around Wenceslas Square. From neo-Greek to Art Nouveau, each building tells its own story.

The Prague Metro runs beneath Wenceslas Square. Muzeum Station is nearby. It provides easy access to the statue.

David Černý created a parody of this statue. It hangs in a Lucerna Palace gallery. It offers a modern take on this iconic figure.

When you visit Prague, spend time here. Reflect on the history. Admire the artistry. Remember the words inscribed on the base. “Saint Wenceslas, duke of the Czech land, prince of ours, do not let perish us nor our descendants.” The Statue of Saint Wenceslas represents resilience. It represents hope. It is for the Czech people.
