How about a school where individuality is not just accepted but celebrated? That’s Hudson College. Hudson College, a co-educational private school, welcomes students from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 12.
Established in 2003, Hudson College occupies the former Earlscourt Junior Public School. The Toronto District School Board leases the building to Hudson College. Part of the building is also leased to Stella Maris Catholic School.
Jack Bavington, one of Hudson College’s founders, serves as the Upper School Director. He once worked as a principal in Scarborough. His son, Jeff Bavington, also a founder, is the Lower School Director. Rose Bastien is the Lower School Principal.
Hudson College is fully accredited by the Ontario Ministry of Education. It is also a member of the Ontario Reggio Association. The curriculum spans from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 12 offering pre-university programs.
In the Lower School, from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 8, students engage in a rigorous academic program. Saxon Math, Language Arts, and Science are key subjects. The schedule operates on an eight-day rotation. The Junior and Senior Kindergarten programs draw inspiration from the Reggio Emilia teaching philosophy. This approach nurtures children’s curiosity and creativity. It encourages exploration and investigation.
Lower School students can participate in extracurricular clubs and activities. Students from JK to Grade 4 enjoy co-curricular programs. These include instructional skating and swimming programs. Students receive certifications through CanSkate and Ultra Swim. Camp trips to Muskoka and visits to Quebec City and Ottawa are also part of the experience. A ski trip to Blue Mountain is another highlight.
The Middle School Preparatory Program prepares students for high school. It focuses on time management, organization, and study habits. Critical thinking and test-taking skills are also emphasized.
Hudson College’s Upper School follows the Ontario curriculum to prepare students for university. Students earn the Ontario Secondary School Diploma. The Upper School uses a semi-flexible three-semester system. The Fall semester runs from September to December. The Winter semester is from January to April. The Spring semester takes place between May and June.
Since Grade 8, students and staff are part of a House System. Each House represents a Canadian region. The Maritimes are Crimson Red. The Great Lakes are Royal Blue. The Prairies are Kelly Green. The Rockies are Purple. Houses compete for the Discovery Trophy.
The Upper School offers clubs, activities, and excursions. Students can also participate in the Duke of Edinburgh program.
Hudson College boasts a semi-modern gymnasium and outdoor facilities. A multi-sport turf field and running track are available. The school’s sports teams are the Hudson Huskies. Hudson College is part of the Small Schools Athletic Federation. Hudson has won 19 banners in various SSAF sports. The school participates in 18 individual and team sports each year. Hudson’s uniform colors are navy blue, royal blue, and gold.
