On a crisp Vienna morning in 1850, Anton Ziegler meticulously etched the name “Ganserlberg” onto his city map. Our journey today brings us to this very spot, the Ganserlberg in Währing, a gentle rise in Vienna’s 18th district. This hill, reaching a height of 211 meters above sea level, is more than just a geographical feature. It’s a place steeped in local lore, a piece of Vienna’s vibrant tapestry. Ganserlberg extends the ridge from Schafberg, through Mitterberg and Gürtel, reaching the AKH. It’s a part of the Vienna Woods, nestled between Anton-Baumann-Park and Johann-Nepomuk-Vogl-Platz. The Ganserlberg, also known as Ganslberg or even Annaberg, carries a name whispered with a touch of culinary history. Legend has it that a humble inn, famed for its delectable roast goose, once stood near the present-day Lutherkirche. This culinary landmark lent its name to the entire hill, transforming it into the “Goose Hill”. Ganserlberg boasts more than just a flavorful past. The Lazaristenkirche, a masterpiece by architect Friedrich von Schmidt, graces its slopes. The iconic Währinger Wasserturm stands proudly in the Anton-Baumann-Park. Even the streets bear echoes of the Ganserlberg’s name. Until 1864, the present-day Schumanngasse was known as Ganserlberggasse. It then briefly adopted the name Annagasse until 1894. So, as you stand upon Ganserlberg, take a moment to savor the view and the stories. Imagine the aroma of roast goose wafting from that long-gone inn, a testament to Vienna’s enduring charm. The Ganserlberg, a quiet hill with a rich past, invites you to explore its layers of history and whispers of delicious secrets.
