We are standing before the FBI Academy Administration Building. It is more than just a building. It is a symbol of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s commitment to excellence.
The FBI Academy is the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s law enforcement training and research center. It is near Quantico in Prince William County, Virginia. The academy occupies 547 acres on the US Marine Corps Base Quantico. It is located 36 miles outside Washington D.C. The FBI Academy is a full service national training facility.
The academy opened on May 7 1972. It was built on 385 acres of woodland. This was after FBI agents were granted the power to possess firearms and make arrests in 1933. The Marine Corps initially allowed the FBI to use their firing ranges at Quantico. As the FBI grew it needed a larger facility. The FBI received approval for a new complex at Quantico in 1965. Construction began in 1969. The new facility opened in 1972. It has over two dozen classrooms, eight conference rooms and a large auditorium. The FBI Academy also has a gym, pool, library and a new firing range.
Elite units attend the FBI Academy. These units include the Hostage Rescue Team and Special Weapons and Tactics. About 1000 police leaders from across the world attend too. They utilize the academy’s training facilities to improve their skills.
The academy provides several training programs. These programs include Firearms, Hogan’s Alley and Tactical and Emergency Vehicle Operations Center. It also offers Survival Skills and Law Enforcement Executive Development. To meet the needs of these programs the facility has a 1.1-mile-long oval road track. It also has a precision obstacle for conducting TEVOC. Hogan’s Alley is a mock town. Hollywood set designers helped to build it. It gives realistic training to agents. It helps the agents experience realistic and stressful scenarios. This better prepares them for real-life situations.
The facility has a newly renovated 20000-square-foot aquatic training center. Aquatic classes boost cardio-respiratory endurance muscular strength and flexibility. They also boost power and speed. New agent trainees use the facility to receive CPR and lifesaving skills. Larger units such as HRT officers receive over 450 hours of training. This training includes advanced scuba diving nighttime diving rescue diving and rescue swimming. The FBI and DEA trainees also have classes. These classes are focused on physical conditioning basic water survival skills and team work.
