Behold the towering presence of Chung Tai Chan Monastery, a beacon of Buddhist architecture. It rises 136 meters high. This makes it the world’s second tallest Buddhist structure after Tianning Pagoda in China. Chung Tai Chan Monastery is not in Hong Kong. It stands in Nantou County, Taiwan.

The story of Chung Tai Chan Monastery begins with its establishment in 2001. C. Y. Lee designed it. He is the architect behind Taipei 101 and Kaohsiung 85 Sky Tower. The monastery quickly became influential in central Taiwan.

Construction of Chung Tai Chan Monastery started in 1990. It concluded in 2001. The total cost was around US$650 million. From 2001 to 2006, it held the title of the world’s tallest Buddhist building. It remains the world’s tallest Buddhist temple.

As you approach Chung Tai Chan Monastery, note the massive gates. Each gate is 11.2 meters tall. Each weighs 5.5 tons. They feature 1,250 doornails. These symbolize Gautama Buddha’s 1,250 disciples.

Inside Chung Tai Chan Monastery, you’ll find the Hall of the Four Heavenly Kings. Giant statues stand at each corner. Each king has four heads. This signifies their encompassing powers.

On the second floor, Gautama Buddha is venerated. The statue is carved from solid granite. This rose-colored granite gives a soft glow to the hall.

Don’t miss the Chung Tai World Museum and Wood Sculpture Gallery. They are next to the monastery. The museum houses religious relics, some up to 1,500 years old. Admission is TWD200. This grants access to both venues. They offer insight into Buddhism.

Behind the museum lies a zen garden. It features hundreds of Buddhist statues. It provides an escape from city life. A stroll here offers tranquility.

Chung Tai Shan founded Chung Tai Chan Monastery. Chung Tai Shan is an international Chan Buddhist order. It was founded by Wei Chueh in 1987. The temple embodies traditional Chinese Chan teaching. It emphasizes enlightenment and cultivation.

Chung Tai Shan has expanded globally. It has over 90 meditation centers. These branches are in Australia, Hong Kong, Japan, Philippines, Thailand and the United States.
