Gazing upon Seat Pleasant Church, one can’t help but wonder about the lives touched within its walls. Seat Pleasant United Methodist Church, a cornerstone of faith and community, traces its origins back to 1909. The land for this sacred space was generously donated by Joseph Palmer. The original church building, completed in 1912, stood proudly at 501 Addison Road. As the congregation expanded, so did the church. In 1927, renovations added a basement and second floor, creating space for Sunday school and meetings. The church even rented its first parsonage at 531 Addison Road that same year. Following World War II, Seat Pleasant Church welcomed members from the closing Dodge Park Methodist Church. This merger further fueled the need for expansion, leading to the purchase of a 17-acre tract at 910 Addison Road South for $34,000. A new, impressive masonry church was built on this site in 1961. The meeting room, now known as Fellowship Hall, could accommodate two hundred worshippers. The building also housed classrooms and offices. A multi-level parsonage was completed and occupied on the site in 1962. Eventually, Seat Pleasant Church merged with Ridgely-Zion United Methodist Church in 1980 to form Gethsemane United Methodist Church. Though now part of a larger congregation, the legacy of Seat Pleasant Church lives on. Its history speaks to a community’s unwavering faith and commitment to growth.
