What if these walls could talk? The Oakton High School Main Building has seen a lot since its doors first opened in 1967. Originally, Oakton High School wasn’t here. It resided in what is now Oakton Elementary School. Imagine students learning computer programming on Fairfax County’s first computer, an IBM 1401, housed right here at Oakton. This was cutting-edge in the late 60s, a testament to Oakton’s early adoption of technology. The school even offered a computer curriculum, one of the first at the high school level. In 1973, Oakton opened its doors to students from W.T. Woodson High School after a tornado damaged their building. Oakton students attended classes in the morning. Woodson students followed in the afternoon. This sharing of resources speaks to the community spirit surrounding Oakton High School. Now, fast forward to the 21st century. Oakton High School Main Building, renovated between 2018 and 2023, stands as a two-story structure, a testament to its growth and the large student population it serves. Subject-specific hallways guide students through their academic journey. English classes primarily occupy the second floor, while history, math, and science classrooms are spread across both levels. Oakton High School isn’t just about academics. The performing arts department shines, regularly recognized as one of the best in the region. The band program boasts numerous Virginia Honor Band awards, the highest recognition for high school bands. The orchestra has performed at prestigious venues like the Hilbert Circle Theatre in Indianapolis. The drama program has staged a variety of productions. These include classics like “Arsenic and Old Lace” and student-written works. Oakton High School also excels in athletics. The school has claimed state titles in cross country, football, baseball, lacrosse, and swimming. The boys’ cross country team notably won back-to-back titles in 2021 and 2022. Their coach even earned The Washington Post’s Coach of the Year award. From its humble beginnings with an IBM 1401 to its modern, renovated building, Oakton High School Main Building has a rich history of academic achievement, artistic excellence, and athletic prowess. It’s a place where potential becomes excellence.
