Joe’s Beerhouse isn’t just a restaurant. It’s a Windhoek institution. It all started in 1991. A small beer garden opened its doors. The brainchild of German-born chef Joachim Gross better known as Joe. Joe’s passion for exploration and storytelling shaped this unique place. His travels fueled its character.

He arrived in Namibia in 1986. He immediately felt at home. His culinary adventures found their perfect stage. Joe’s Beerhouse quickly became a favourite spot for locals and tourists alike. It wasn’t always on Nelson Mandela Avenue. It began on Grimm Street. Two and a half years later it moved to Independence Avenue. Finally it settled at its current location in 2001.

The atmosphere is unlike any other restaurant. It’s filled with unique items Joe collected on his journeys. Kudu horns intertwine. A mini car sits perched on top of a truck. Gigantic cow horns adorn the walls. Jagermeister bottles line the shelves. Rusting milk jugs fuel pumps lamps bottle caps and anchors are everywhere. Each item has a story to tell. It’s a visual feast. It’s a world of wonder and intrigue.

Joe has since retired. Thomas and Carol-Jean Rechter continue his legacy. Since 2012 they’ve kept the spirit alive. They’ve elevated Joe’s Beerhouse to new heights. They’ve stayed true to its original vision.

The food is amazing. There’s something for everyone. You can savour Baked Garlic Oysters. You can try Plain Garlic Snails or Cheesy Garlic Snails. Eisbein and Joe’s Bratwurst are classic Namibian dishes. Vegetarians aren’t left out. Burgers pizzas and delicious steaks are also on the menu. Game Fillet and Kudu Loin Steak are popular choices. Sweet tooths can enjoy Lion’s Paw Chocolate Brownie and Homemade Malva Pudding.
