Slipping back in time, imagine the year 1117. A transaction unfolds between Guidotto and Ansedise di Collalto, involving the monastery of Sant’Ilario. This old document mentions a place, a name echoing through the ages: Marano. Today, we stand before Marano Veneziano, a quaint village nestled within the municipality of Mira, in the metropolitan city of Venice. Marano Veneziano whispers tales of a rich past, woven into the very fabric of its existence. Relatively young as a parish, it gained independence from Borbiago around 1930. Yet, its name predates this separation, rooted in the medieval Latin word “Mara,” signifying marshes, ponds, and lagoons. The landscape surrounding Marano Veneziano bears witness to this watery heritage, with remnants of marshlands still visible. This little village boasts a unique distinction – its bell tower is shorter than its church. This architectural quirk adds to the charm of Marano Veneziano, setting it apart from countless others. The arrival of the Venice-Milan railway in 1846 spurred development, further amplified by the establishment of the Marchi chemical factory in the late 19th century. The factory, located along the Mirano Canal, produced chemical fertilizers, copper sulfate, sulfuric acid, and sodium fluorosilicate. Another industry contributing to the village’s growth was the Husci laboratory, specializing in pharmaceuticals. Even a near-miss by a tornado in July 2015 couldn’t diminish the spirit of Marano Veneziano. The annual village festival, or “sagra,” takes place at the end of August, kicking off with a non-competitive marathon winding through the village streets and surrounding countryside. The heart of Marano Veneziano lies at the crossroads of provincial roads, linking it to neighboring towns like Mirano and Mira. The waters of the Mirano Canal flow past, offering a picturesque backdrop. A direct railway connection to Venice and Padua further enhances its accessibility. Amidst this charming village stands Villa Silva Corò, a 17th-century complex. It comprises a main villa, a large rustic annex perpendicular to the villa’s east side, and a separate oratory. The villa’s central structure is flanked by two lower wings, creating a visually appealing architectural composition. As we leave Marano Veneziano, let the image of its unique bell tower and the echoes of its marshland origins linger in your memory. A testament to its resilience and vibrant community, Marano Veneziano continues to thrive, a hidden gem waiting to be discovered.
