Ebenezer Public School first opened its doors in June 1874 as Portland Head Provisional School. The school transitioned to its current name, Ebenezer Public School, in August 1887. Today, Ebenezer Public School stands proudly on Sackville Road, educating approximately 156 students from grades K-6. But the history of education in Ebenezer predates the establishment of the public school. Long before the current buildings graced Sackville Road, a small schoolroom existed within the Ebenezer Church, built in 1809. With the appointment of John Youl as teacher in 1810, this humble room became a center of learning for local children. This church-run school continued its vital role until 1874, when the responsibility for education transitioned to the state. Interestingly, classes were still held in the Ebenezer Church even after the establishment of the provisional school. This continued until the completion of the new Ebenezer Public School building on Coromandel Road in 1887. The Ebenezer Church holds a special distinction. It is recognized by the NSW Department of Education and Communities as the oldest existing school building in Australia. This rich history adds another layer of significance to Ebenezer Public School. It connects the present-day students to a long legacy of learning and community in the Hawkesbury region.
