In 1902, a cornerstone was laid at 456 King Street East. This marked the beginning of Riverside Evangelical Missionary Church. Chester D. Massey, son of the Massey Hall founder, placed coins, newspapers, and a Christian Guardian copy under the stone. The original cost was $20,000. The church, first known as King Street East Methodist Church, held its first services in 1903. Later, in 1925, with the unification of Methodist, Presbyterian, and Congregational churches, it became King Street United Church of Canada. The mid-1940s brought a new congregation, Redemption Tidings Tabernacle. Around 1953, it transitioned to Riverside Church. Today, it stands as Riverside Evangelical Missionary Church, a testament to its evolving history. In 2020, the City of Toronto recognized its significance with a heritage designation.
