“Did Mr. Demetrius ever catch you causing mischief?” I ask, a playful glint in my eye, as we stand before Escola Municipal Professora Hermínia Lopes Lobo. This school, nestled in the heart of Vila Assunção, Santo André, holds more than just lessons and homework within its walls. It cradles memories, laughter, and perhaps a few mischievous deeds. The building itself has seen many transformations. It initially served as the Grupo Escolar Professora Hermínia Lopes Lobo. Then, in the mid-1960s, part of it was repurposed to house the first Ginásio Estadual de Vila Assunção. Imagine the excitement of those first students, eager to learn and explore. One graduating class from 1969, known as the “turma do fundão” (the back-row gang), held lively fundraisers in the schoolyard and the Aramaçan social hall to afford their graduation festivities. Their chosen venue was the Clube Bochófilo de Santo André. A beloved figure from those days was Mr. Demetrius, the school caretaker. He often turned a blind eye to the students’ antics, humorously comparing their boisterous gatherings to “the bombs of subversives.” As we gaze at Escola Municipal Professora Hermínia Lopes Lobo today, we can almost hear the echoes of Mr. Demetrius’s words and the laughter of the students. It’s a reminder that history isn’t just about dates and facts. It’s about the people who lived it, the memories they created, and the spirit that lives on within these walls.
